Head & Neck cancers affect the upper aerodigestive tract and are one of the most common cancers worldwide. Head & Neck Cancers include oral cancers, pharyngeal cancers, laryngeal cancers, nasopharyngeal and paranasal sinus cancers, salivary gland cancers and thyroid cancers. Oral Cancer is the most common cancer amongst Indian men. Tobacco (both smoking & smokeless) is the single most important cause for oral cancers. Oral Cancers are amenable to prevention and early detection. Warning signs of head & neck cancer include a mouth ulcer that does not heal, red or white patch in the mouth, hoarseness of voice or a neck swelling. A thorough clinical examination along with appropriate investigations helps to detect cancers early. Surgery is the preferred modality for early as well as certain locally advanced head & neck cancers. Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy also play a significant role in curing as well controlling these cancers.
